PETE SAMPRAS JOINS TENNIS MAGAZINE AS PART OWNER, CONTRIBUTOR

By Anonymous

LOS ANGELES, October 6, 2003 - Pete Sampras, the tennis legend who officially retired in August at the U.S. Open, has become an investor, partner and special consultant to TENNIS Magazine and TENNIS.com, it was announced today by Bob Miller, CEO of TENNIS Magazine, and Bob Kain, co-CEO of IMG, which represents Sampras. This new dual role is his first post-retirement corporate commitment.

“TENNIS Magazine has always been the leader and the pulse of the industry,” Sampras says. “It’s definitely a way for me to remain involved in tennis while helping to grow and improve the sport. I share the vision of TENNIS’ owners Bob Miller and George Mackin, and I look forward to this partnership.”

“We are honored to have Pete join us at TENNIS and we are eager to begin working with him,” Miller says. “Pete’s insights into the sport and his passion for the game will be tremendous resources for our readers and advertisers.”

“With Pete joining Chris Evert, who has served as our publisher since 2000, we now have arguably the greatest male and female U.S. tennis players in history on board at TENNIS Magazine,” says Mackin.

Sampras will become involved in TENNIS Magazine’s corporate and marketing efforts and will contribute articles and instruction pieces to the publication. He will also participate in specific magazine endeavors with advertisers, tennis associations and TENNIS Magazine-sponsored events.

Paul Annacone, Sampras’ longtime coach and adviser, and a current TENNIS Magazine contributor, will continue in that role as well as work with Sampras and the business and editorial staffs of the magazine.

Sampras’ record 14 Grand Slam singles titles included seven Wimbledon crowns, five U.S. Open championships and two Australian Open titles over a 15-year career. As a 19-year-old, he became the youngest man ever to win the U.S. Open. He finished his career with another U.S. Open title in 2002 at what became his final tournament-a thrilling four-set victory over longtime rival Andre Agassi in Arthur Ashe Stadium. With that victory, Sampras, at 31, became the oldest U.S. Open winner since Ken Rosewall (35) in 1970, and the oldest Grand Slam winner since Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in 1975. Sampras won 64 career singles titles, and finished six straight seasons (1993-1998) as the No. 1 ranked player in the world, breaking the record previously held by Jimmy Connors. He was a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team for eight years, helping the United States to titles in 1992 and 1995.

Palencia Names David Witt As Community’s Director of Tennis

By Anonymous

St. Augustine, FL August 13, 2004 -- David Witt, a ten-year pro on the ATP Tour, has been named Director of Tennis at Palencia, a new master-planned community by Hines with beautiful homes, abundant amenities, stunning surroundings and a convenient location.

Tennis enthusiasts will enjoy Palencia’s spectacular tennis complex, including eight, lighted, hard-tru hydro grid clay courts and a covered pavilion area.

“Bringing David Witt on board to head our new tennis program is another example of our commitment to quality and outstanding amenities,” said Walt O’Shea, Hines project manager.

Witt, a Jacksonville Beach native, most recently spent four and a half years as director of tennis at the ATP Club in Ponte Vedra Beach.

“I am very excited about what we can offer here at Palencia. My immediate goal is to get women, men and kids of all ages playing on our spectacular new facility,” Witt said. “There is a lot of interest in the game. With our great new facility we hope to sign up players of all ages for leagues and start programs and clinics aimed at making tennis fun and exciting.”

Before turning pro in 1991, Witt was named the No. 1 ranked USTA 16s player in 1989. He enjoyed an outstanding junior career, winning the 1989 USTA Boys' 16s Clay, Hard and National Championships. Witt reached the quarterfinals at the 1990 USTA Boys' 18s and doubles winner at the Astrid Bowl in Belgium.

Known as an all court player with a big serve and powerful ground strokes he took that reputation with him on the ATP tour. He calls playing on the tour a dream come true. “Two of my most vivid memories are being at Wimbledon for the first time and the US Open in Flushing Meadow, a scene all to its own in tennis history. There’s so much history and tradition.” Witt said.

Recently former Wimbledon finalist and top 20 world ranked doubles player Scott Melville and Witt were the winners of the 2004 Firehouse Subs Men's Doubles Tennis Tournament to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, helping raise more than $60,000 for MDA.

Family and community mean a lot to Witt, and are values and traits he brings with him to Palencia. Designed to be family-friendly, Palencia consists of numerous intimate neighborhoods with unique natural features such as pocket parks, green spaces, boardwalks and nature trails.
Witt began playing tennis at age seven while watching his mom and dad play the game.

“I grew up liking and playing a lot of sports, when I was 11 or 12, I decided to concentrate on tennis,” Witt said.

Witt resides at St. Johns Golf and Country Club with his wife and four children.
